Breast Size, Shape & Concerns / Question
Published: December 10, 1999

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am an 11 years old female. I am starting to develop a breast only on one side. The side that is growing is sore. The other side does not show any signs of ever growing. I'm really worried what could happen. Do you think my other breast will start to grown. Is this normal, please answer me ASAP.

Dear Lopsided Breast Growth,

VERY NORMAL!

Many teenage women go through this and it can be an embarrassing, difficult thing to deal with. Most of the time this is very normal and your other breast will probably start to show signs of growth fairly soon, within 6 months to one year. The soreness you are feeling in your growing breast is due to your changing body. You should really try to talk to an adult female or a doctor about this because puberty and your body's changes are very confusing, but almost always normal.

Your doctor can give you details and reassurances that what you are experiencing is okay and on what to expect during the next several years, like your menstruation (period), breast development, pubic hair growth, and mood and hormone changes.
