My Boyfriend Has Been Diagnosed with Psychosis. What Do I Need to Know to Help Him?

Published: September 30, 2020
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My boyfriend (20) has recently been diagnosed with Psychosis and we are all strongly suspicious he may be Schizophrenic. Schizophrenia is not as commonly talked about as it should be, and I don't know how I can help him. I want to be able to spend the rest of my life with him. What should I know or understand about this disorder that will help me be able to help him?

Dear My Boyfriend Has Been Diagnosed with Psychosis. What Do I Need to Know to Help Him?,

When someone is diagnosed with any illness it can be overwhelming and scary for the individual and those close to them. You mention that your boyfriend was recently diagnosed with Psychosis.  This mental health condition is one that is related to Schizophrenia.

You are right, Schizophrenia is not really talked about a lot and easily misunderstood. The National Alliance on Mental Illness explains that Schizophrenia is a complex, long-term mental illness.

One way to help your boyfriend is to be supportive and understanding. It is important you encourage him to take his medicine and work with his doctor and other health professionals to create his personal treatment plan. Learn all you can about the illness. Being encouraging and offering to help seem like small gestures but can have a big impact.

TeenHealth wants to remind you that your mental health is also important. Make sure that you are taking care of yourself too. We hope this helps and good luck!
