Published: August 04, 2020
Dear TeenHealthFX,
for reference - i’m a 19 year old female with anxiety and i have a health worry: i have a low sex drive in general, (i think i it’s because i don’t feel sexual attraction). but recently it seems like when i get turned on i don’t stay turned on - like the last two times i tried to m*****bate, i only did it for like a few seconds because then i got turned off again and i couldn’t turn myself back on i guess i’m worried because it’s only been recently so i’m worried it’s a health thing and i really need reassurance because im panicking a lot and i can’t tell anyone please help me

Dear I Have Anxiety And Can't Stay Turned On. Is There Something Wrong With Me?,

TeenHealthFX wants to assure you that there is nothing wrong with you. It is possible that because of your anxiety, it is limiting your ability to make yourself feel good. Have you been seen by a doctor to diagnose your anxiety? If not, we suggest you start there and get an official diagnosis. This can help your doctor teach you ways to help keep your anxiety under control and lead to better mental health.

In terms of masturbation, it is normal to be “turned on” or “turned off” depending on the situation. It may also be helpful to explore different ways. Masturbation is different for everyone. It has physical, mental, and emotional health benefits and may take time to figure out what works best for you.

If you have questions or concerns about your health, your doctor is the best person to address your concerns.  If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
