Dear TeenHealthFX,
Is it true I can still get sick in the summer? Don’t viruses die in heat?

Dear Is It True I Can Still Get Sick In The Summer?,

TeenHealthFX is glad you asked this question. Although there is not a very clear-cut answer, it is still important information to know. There are over 200 different viruses that cause various illnesses year-round.  For example, the virus that causes influenza (flu) is around all year but it’s most common during the fall and winter because it survives better in colder and drier climates. There are also a few warm weather viruses like the enteroviruses that causes summer colds.

Since COVID-19 is still a relatively new virus, scientists are not sure if the summer heat and humidity will slow the spread of the virus. TeenHealthFX suggests that you continue to follow these CDC guidelines:

Wash your hands often.

Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough.

Stay at least 6 feet from other people when out.

Wear a face covering out in public.

Practice self-care remembering to eat well, exercise and get enough sleep.

Take care of your mental health (journaling, meditating).

We hope this helps. Have a safe and healthy summer.
