Dear Why Do I Need The Flu Shot? I Thought Coronavirus Is Different. ,

Even though the Flu and Coronavirus (COVID-19) are different viruses, both can make you very sick. The flu is caused by influenza viruses and COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Both viruses have similar symptoms such as fever, body aches, and coughing and it may be hard to tell them apart.

Currently, there is not vaccine for COVID-19 and the CDC recommends everyone get a flu shot every year to help prevent the severity of the illness. As we approach the fall and winter months, the flu virus becomes a big issue and can cause many people to get sick.

By getting the flu shot, it will help your body fight off the flu if you do get infected. The flu shot does not directly reduce your chances of getting COVID-19 because they are different viruses. However, since both viruses will be spreading at the same time, it is very important to get the flu vaccine.

Remember, the most important step in preventing any kind of illness is hand washing. In addition, make sure you are following local guidelines and wearing a mask when you cannot practice social distancing.
