TeenHealth is glad you asked this question! Calories are a unit measurement of how much energy is in food/drinks. There is an estimated average that humans should eat to avoid health problems associated with obesity. Obesity is a chronic health condition caused by too much body fat. The number of calories suggested for someone to consume in a day is different for everyone! It is dependent on factors such as age, height, current weight, gender, and if you are trying to maintain, gain, or lose weight. If you are curious about the amount suggested for you TeenHealth FX recommends speaking to your doctor or a registered dietician. 

It is possible to consume more calories than your body may need, but the excess calories would be stored as fat.  If this occurs occasionally, there should be no long-term health effects, but it is important to practice a balanced diet. Too much of anything is not beneficial for the body.
