I Feel Uncomfortable When I'm Cuddling. Is This Normal?

Published: November 15, 2022
Dear TeenHealth FX,
When I'm cuddled or even have someone's arm around me, my genitals feel very uncomfortable to the point I have to get up or tell whoever is cuddling me to stop. The only time this doesn't happen is when I'm extremely upset or anxious. Is this normal? I feel guilty and scared, does this happen to other people?

Dear I Feel Uncomfortable When I'm Cuddling. Is This Normal?,

TeenHealthFX understands your concerns. As we grow, our bodies and minds go through many changes. One thing that everyone goes through is puberty. Kidshealth.org explains, during puberty, our bodies change how we look on the outside and how we feel on the inside. You may have confusing feelings about emotions, the physical changes occurring, relationships with friends, and many others.

The good news is that what you are feeling is normal. Talking about these things with others can help you feel less anxious or embarrassed. It is always a good idea to talk with someone you trust if you are feeling uncomfortable or concerned about how you feel or about your body. This could be an older sibling or family member, close friend, trusted adult, teacher, or school counselor.

If you feel your emotions not getting better and want to reach out to a doctor for help, we encourage you to contact your regular doctor. If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
