Dear TeenHealthFX,
my dad is an alcoholic and I am afraid I will be too. What can I do to make sure I don't turn out like him?

Dear My Dad Is An Alcoholic. What Can I Do To Make Sure I Don’t Turn Out Like Him?,

At times, many teens feel as though they will end up like their parents for a variety of reasons. TeenHealth would like to remind you that although your dad is an alcoholic this doesn’t mean that you will become one.  It’s true that you are at a greater risk, but you can choose your own path. You have the power to take charge of your life and actions.

Here are some tips that may help as you get older:

  • You are not your dad and you are not responsible for his actions.
  • It’s illegal for anyone in the US under the age of 21 to drink alcohol.
  • Learn and understand the negative effects of alcohol abuse.
  • Hang out with friends who do not drink or do drugs.
  • It’s OK to say NO!  Most teens do not drink regularly, so you’re not alone.
  • If you do decide to drink, avoid binge drinking. CDC explains 4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men in one setting is considered binge drinking. This can lead to excessive drinking over time.
  • Never drink when you feel bad or stressed out. Practice healthy ways to reduce your stressors like exercising, deep breaths, meditation or journaling.

We hope this helps.
