I Still Care For My Ex-Girlfriend, What Do I Do?

Published: June 15, 2020
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My girlfriend and I just broke up after 5 years together. I feel like I need to find myself again. What do you think I should do? I still care for her but things are just so hard right now. Any advice would help

Dear I Still Care For My Ex-Girlfriend, What Do I Do?,

TeenHealthFX is sorry to hear of your current situation. Break-ups are never easy, and it is hard to figure out what to do next. We understand how you may be feeling and since you have been with your girlfriend for 5 years you may have felt like you “lost” yourself. It is important to take some time for yourself and figure out what your wants and needs are. It is also a good idea to pick up a hobby or activity you enjoy starting feeling like yourself again.

Since you still care for her, maybe the break-up is not permanent, but a time for reflection. It is possible both parties need to reevaluate and think about what is needed in the relationship to make it work. A common and crucial concept that many relationships lack is open and honest communication. If you both do not discuss how each of you are feeling and try to put yourself in the other’s shoes, it can result in the end of your relationship when in reality you both still want to be with each other. Sometimes all a person needs to do is carve out some alone time each week doing something he/she enjoys avoiding that feeling of losing yourself. It could be something as simple as enjoying the outdoors, meeting up with a friend, or just quiet time at home.

We hope this helps. Good luck!
