Breast, Nipple, Chest & Back Pain

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My breasts get really hot and itchy sometimes especially my nipples. I have pain on the sides of my breasts that connects to my armpits. And my armpit area hurts. I've also been getting chest pains and back pain. I went to the doctor two times about it but she's said it's just depression and anxiety.also have been getting a lot of stomach aches.whats wrong with me

Dear Breast, Nipple, Chest & Back Pain,

During teenage years, breasts and nipples are still growing and changing. These areas may be influenced by:

  • Your menstrual cycle (May cause breast tenderness, swelling, aches and/or tingling)
  • Heat and/or cold
  • Stimulation and/or pressure

 

Further, you stated that you also experience pain in your back and chest, as well as stomach. TeenHealthFX cannot conduct a proper diagnosis online. Thus, we highly suggest scheduling an appointment with another physician for a second opinion. To best prepare for your visit, you should gather:

  • Family medical history
  • Pain chart/calendar to describe when your pain(s) generally occur

 

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers. 

Lastly, you mentioned experiencing anxiety and depression. TeenHealthFX suggests reaching out to a trusted adult to discuss your current emotional state. You can speak with your parents, guidance counselor, school nurse or teacher. Your trusted adult of choice can help refer you to a certified mental health professional.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area. You can also contact your insurance company to get a list of in-network mental health providers or check with your school social worker or psychologist to get a list of referrals in your area.
