Dear What is This Lump on the Inside of My Vagina?,

It is difficult to be able to say what it could be without examining the area. Women have lots of glands around the vaginal area. It could be an inflamed hair follicle, which is basically the root of your hair that is irritated. That is typically found in women that shave or wax their hair, or simply have an ingrown hair. There are also other glands in your vagina that could be reactive as well.  Things that you should look out for is if it is painful or getting larger, or you develop any new symptoms, like fevers, chills, or discharge from your vagina. If is still a bother to you, TeenHealthFX would advise you make an appointment with your doctor so that they can evaluate it. If the issue is that you feel uncomfortable to have your mom there, you could always make an appointment in the adolescent clinic at Morristown Medical Center or Overlook Medical Center if you live in New Jersey. There, you will be able to be seen by a doctor, as long as you are above 14 years old, and it will remain confidential. Also, keep in mind that as a teen, you will have time in your visit were you will be allowed to discuss things that are worrisome to you in confidence without your parents being physically there.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
