Dear How Long After Hernia Surgery Do I Have to Wait to Have Sex?,

TeenHealthFX recommends that you check in with your surgical team about that. Depending on what is going on with the incision, or if there are any complications, the answer could change. Your team would be the best people to advise you on this.

FX would also like to remind you of the importance of practicing safer sex. There is definitely a chance of transmitting STDs, including HIV, from unprotected anal sex (without a condom). So it's important to always use condoms AND lubrication to lower your chances of getting an STD. As far as lubrication goes, don't use anything with oil in it, like Vaseline, lotion, or baby oil. Oil-based lubes can weaken a condom and make it more likely to break. You can get safe lubricants (water or silicone based) in the condom aisle at drug and grocery stores.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
