How Do I Stop My Friends From Pressuring Me To Have Sex?

Dear TeenHealthFX,
My friends are pressuring me to have sex with my boyfriend but my boyfriend is okay with waiting. All of my friends have had sex already. How do I handle this without being a loser?

Dear How Do I Stop My Friends From Pressuring Me To Have Sex?,

TeenHealthFX is sorry you are dealing with this. It is unfair for your friends to put that pressure on you. You are not a loser by standing up for yourself and defending your decision. If anything, it makes you brave and very mature!

Your friends should be understanding of your feelings and accept your decision just like your boyfriend has. It would be a good idea for you to talk to your friends and tell them how you feel. Explain to them that you and your boyfriend have already had this discussion and you both are doing what is best for your own relationship.

Remember, it is your choice to decide if/when you are ready, and it is important not to rush into it. Having sex is a big decision with even bigger consequences if not done safely. Even though it may be hard to stand up to your friends, true friends wouldn’t try to force you to do something you feel unsafe doing.

Planned parenthood  has a great article on how to know when you are ready for sex. We encourage you to read it when you have a chance.
