I Have HSV-1. Can I Spread It To Someone Else?

Published: November 02, 2020
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Today I found out I had HSV 1 and I’m still a virgin and never did anything sexually with anyone so I’m freaking out. But if I ever choose to do oral sex to someone’s Genital can I possibly transfer it on and cause them to have Genital herpes?

Dear I Have HSV-1. Can I Spread It To Someone Else?,

There are two types of Herpes Simplex Viruses. HSV-1, or oral herpes causes sores around the mouth and lips. The sores are often referred to as cold scores or fever blisters. HSV-1 can cause genital herpes through oral sex but most cases of genital herpes are caused by HSV-2.

There is no cure for herpes only treatments for symptoms. Once someone gets diagnosed with it, it does not go away.  It is important to discuss with your doctor how to keep you and your partner safe before engaging in any sexual act.

TeenHealthFX would also like to mention the importance of practicing safe sex. We encourage all teens to use condoms every time they engage in any type of sexual activity. Condoms are only 98% in preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections when used correctly and on every sexual encounter.

If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the  Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
