Irregular Periods for Three Years
There are a variety of reasons why young women have irregular periods. Some experience irregular periods for a couple of months, or even a couple of years, after first starting their periods. Others can have irregular periods due to stress, over-exercising, poor nutrition, or hormonal imbalances. For those who are sexually active, a missed period could also be a sign of pregnancy.
TeenHealthFX cannot give you a definitive diagnosis over the web as to why your period has been irregular for the past three years and why you have not had your period for the past four months. However, given the length of time this has been a problem, we do think it is important for you to meet with a medical professional, such as your primary care physician, an adolescent medicine specialist or a gynecologist, who can provide you with an accurate diagnosis and any needed treatment.
If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
