Dear My Period is Late - Is It Because I Was Sick?,

It is certainly possible for physical or emotional stress to change period frequency. However, since you are sexually active and had unprotected sex (even though you have been fully compliant with taking your birth control pills), it would be best to get checked out to make sure all is well. If the unprotected sex occurred within the last 5 days, you can get Plan B One Step, or an equivalent generic, over-the-counter emergency birth control from your local pharmacy and can take the entire dose, which will hopefully prevent any possible pregnancy.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
